When you give people of the community the power to unleash their unrestricted creativity onto an already amazing game, beautiful masterpieces begin to unfold in the world of gaming. What makes modding so special is the fact that the people who have the capability to create mods are often times die-hard fans of the game that they are modding for so, they will spend countless ours molding for a specific idea they will then release onto the community for everyone to enjoy.I’ve been playing Skyrim for a while now. Ever since it came out on consoles back in 2011 I have spent many hours trying to create my perfect stealth mage for my ideal Skyrim experience. I felt a great deal of envy when I heard that PC players had the ability to create modifications to the game and increase their depth of immersion. After a while, to my excitement, us console players were given the opportunity to use and create mods for Xbox One and Ps4 (Modding on the Ps4 is a lot more limited tho). It’s amazing how much time and effort people will put into creating a new mod for their favorite game! Many modders are incredibly skilled in creating a whole new experience for the players, I’ve seen some mods that will entirely put you into a brand new experience, a whole new world to explore altogether.

My favorite mods are the ones that change the environment within the game world. These are the ones that help to make a great game even better! I’ve seen mods that have added to the music for Skyrim and that cue in the perfect battle song for fighting against a deadly dragon, there are mods that completely enhance things like the water and mountains in the wilderness around you, and there are even mods that add different birds to the game that you’ll see eating little bread crumbs on the ground around you. It’s all these little things that matter in a game and these seemingly innocuous things all come together to provide you with an optimal gaming experience.
The picture I have above, which was taken on Xbox One, gives you two different examples of the types of mods that are out there for players to try. On the left, you have a character I created on my third playthrough. I usually go with an Orc or a Khajiit, but this time I decided to go with a female werewolf just to try something new. She would wear heavy armor and wield greatswords, all skills I have never used with any of my other characters. After going through and downloading all of the mods I found appealing, I loaded up a new game and sent Adolpha, which means (“female wolf” I know it’s corny, right?), off on her journey! Now, if you’ve played the vanilla version of Skyrim without any mods it’s quite obvious that my character has the superior looks of anything you could create without mods, and this is what I’m talking about when I say that mods give each player an optimal experience when playing Skyrim! You are almost completely unencumbered when it comes to what you are able to create and explore. I have friends who have told me a complete backstory of their character that they’ve come up with as a way to get deeply enveloped to the game. They would say things like, “you see that scar on her cheek comes from…” or “she has black eyes because she’s a…”, all of which would be much more difficult without the use of mods.
Now on the right, you can see an enhanced version of Lydia. This is an example of a slight problem when it comes to modding. When you have free reins to create what you want, people start to go crazy with the limitless possibilities of their artistic capabilities. I never liked the way Lydia looked on the vanilla version of Skyrim. I could never get passed her misshapen body and manly face, so I when I saw the mod to redesign my followers, I was all for it. Now the redesign followers mod didn’t make my Lydia completely nude, but couple that with the mod “amazing follower tweaks” and you have full frontal nude Lydia. You can imagine how surprised I was when I saw her like this. I, of course, have no problem with a nude Lydia, but I’m sure others out there would be appalled at what they were seeing. I thought that Bethesda would have been able to stop something like this from happening from the beginning. It makes sense that something like this could happen though. There are so many different modders out there and they are able to create almost anything and upload it to the community, so there are bound to be things that slip through cracks. It’s just one of the risks of allowing people to have complete creative control. Just so you know, stuff like this rarely happens, so good job so far Bethesda. Oh, and you won’t be able to get Lydia nude like this anymore because the mod has since been deleted, so don’t go looking for it because you’ll just be wasting your time.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed the beautiful background displayed behind these two women but if you haven’t please take the time to do so now. Stop ogling the breasts and check out the landscape. This is the other type of mod I mentioned before. The attention to detail is unprecedented and eye opening. If you get the right combination of mods, you can really create a realistic world that can only be found in Skyrim.
Its worth mentioning that there are some risks when playing with mods. If you get too many of them you may cause your game to crash to the point where you have to delete the save file entirely and start from scratch (which has happened to me before). Just make sure you read the descriptions that are posted with each mod, experienced modders are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to knowing which mods are compatible and which aren’t. Make sure you don’t get too many mods that attempt to do the same thing either, for example, you shouldn’t download two different mods that are created to change the way the sky looks, you’ll only crash your game. Also, don’t load up a bunch of mods and delete them down the road on a latter save because your game will have a hard time loading the save and, you guessed it, it’ll crash. If you do delete certain mods and replace them with another, you may need to hard reset your Xbox so the system cache can get rid of the old mods and add in the new ones. Follow these tips and you’ll have an amazing experience in Skyrim, happy modding!
